SECOND PETER

Second Peter 1

¶ Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a faith precious as ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

May grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

As his divine power has given us everything that pertains to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who has called us to glory and goodness:

By which he has given us exceedingly great and precious promises: that through them you might partake of the divine nature, and escape the corruption that is in the world through lust.

¶ In view of that, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness knowledge;

And to knowledge self-control; and to self-control patience; and to patience godliness;

And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love.

For if these qualities are yours, and abound, they keep you from being useless and unproductive in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For he who lacks these things is blind, and shortsighted, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

Therefore, brethren, be all the more eager to make certain that you are called and chosen: for if you do these things, you will never fall:

And you will receive a rich welcome into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

¶ Therefore I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you know them, and are well grounded in the truth you have.

And I consider it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to remind you of these things;

Knowing that I will soon lay aside my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ has told me.

Moreover I will make every effort to see that you will always be able to remember these things after my departure.

¶ For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when a voice came to him from the sublime glory, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

And we heard this voice that came from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mount.

¶ Therefore we are even more certain of the words of scripture; to which you do well to pay attention, as to a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the day star arises in your hearts:

Knowing this first, that no truth of scripture comes from any private explanation.

Because scripture did not originate of old by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

[Note: Verse 20 tells us that the truth of Scripture is not to be found in man-made explanations, but in what the words actually say.]
