THE BOOK OF PSALMS

Psalm 89

A reflective poem by Ethan the Ezrahite.

¶ I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever: with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

For I will declare, Your mercy is established forever in the heavens: your faithfulness there is everlasting.

I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn to David my servant,

I will establish your seed forever, and build up your throne for all generations. Selah.

¶ Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD: let the congregation of the saints praise your faithfulness.

For who in the heavens can be compared to the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty is like the LORD?

God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, much greater and more terrifying than all who are around him.

O LORD God of hosts, who is like you LORD? your strength and faithfulness surround you?

You rule the raging of the sea: when its waves arise, you still them.

You have broken Rahab in pieces, as one who is slain; you have scattered your enemies with your strong arm.

The heavens are yours, the earth is yours also: you made the world and everything in it.

You created the north and the south: mount Tabor and mount Hermon joyfully praise your name.

You have a mighty arm: your hand is strong, and your right hand is lifted high.

Your throne is built on righteousness and justice: mercy and truth will go before you.

¶ Blessed is the people who know the joyful sound: they will walk, O LORD, in the light of your presence.

They will delight in your name all day long: and in your righteousness they are exalted.

For you are the glory of their strength: and by your favor our horn is exalted.

For the LORD is our defense; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.

¶ Once you spoke in a vision to your holy one, and said, I have empowered one who is mighty to help; I have exalted one chosen from among the people.

I have found David my servant; and have anointed him with my holy oil:

I will establish him with my hand: and will strengthen him with my arm.

The enemy will not outwit him; and the son of perdition will not disgrace him.

And I will crush his enemies before his face, and afflict those who hate him.

But my faithfulness and my mercy will be with him: and in my name his horn will be exalted.

I will put the sea under his power, and the rivers under his right hand.

He will cry to me, You are my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.

And I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

I will reserve my mercy for him forever, and with him my covenant will never fail.

I will also cause his seed to endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

If his children forsake my law, and do not walk in my ordinances;

If they break my statutes, and do not keep my commandments;

Then I will punish their wrongs with a rod, and their sins with blows.

Nevertheless I will not stop loving him, or prove myself unfaithful.

I will not violate my covenant, or break the promise I have given.

I have sworn by my holiness, once and for all, I will not lie to David.

His seed will endure forever, and his throne will be like the sun before me.

It will be established forever like the moon, as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.

¶ But you have cast off and rejected, you have been angry with your anointed.

You have renounced the covenant with your servant: you have profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.

You have broken down all his walls; you have laid his fortified cities in ruins.

All who travel along the road plunder him: he is a reproach to his neighbors.

You have held high the right hand of his enemies; you have caused all of his enemies to rejoice.

You have also turned back the edge of his sword, and have not let him stand in battle.

You have brought his glory to an end, and hurled his throne down to the ground.

You have shortened the days of his youth: you have covered him with shame. Selah.

How long, LORD? will you hide yourself forever? will your wrath burn like fire?

Remember how short my time is: have you made all men for nothing?

What man can live, and not see death? can he deliver his soul from the grave? Selah.

Lord, where is the love you showed at first, and faithfully promised David in an oath?

Remember, Lord, how your servants are scorned; I bear in my heart the reproach of all the nations;

With which your enemies have taunted, O LORD; with which they have mocked the footsteps of your anointed.

Praise be to the LORD forever. Amen, and Amen.
