THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 9

¶ And he got into a boat, crossed over, and came to his own city.

And, there, they brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a bed: and having seen their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man; Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven.

At this, some of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemes.

And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Why do you think evil in your hearts?

For which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven; or to say, Arise, and walk?

But that you may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, (he then said to the paralyzed man,) Get up, pick up your bed, and go to your house.

And he arose, and went to his house.

But when the multitudes saw it, they marveled, and glorified God, who had given such power to men.

¶ And as Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the tax collector’s booth: and he said to him, Follow me. And he got up, and followed him.

And it happened, that as Jesus sat in the house at dinner, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why does your Master eat with publicans and sinners?

But when Jesus heard that, he said to them, Those who are healthy do not need a doctor, but those who are sick do.

But go and learn what this means, I desire mercy, not sacrifice: for I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

¶ Then the disciples of John came to him, asking, Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?

And Jesus said to them, Can the attendants of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and then they will fast.

No one sews a piece of new cloth onto an old garment, for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse.

Nor do men put new wine into old bottles: if they do the leather will split, the wine will run out, and the bottles will be ruined: instead they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

¶ While he was saying these things to them, behold, a certain official came, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay your hand upon her, and she will live.

And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.

And, behold, a woman, who had been suffering from bleeding for twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:

For she said within herself, If I can just touch his garment, I will be healed.

But Jesus turned around, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be comforted; your faith has made you well. And the woman was healed from that hour.

And when Jesus entered the official’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd,

He said to them, Go away: for the girl is not dead, but asleep. But they laughed at him.

But when the crowd had been put out, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the girl got up.

And this news spread through all that region.

¶ And when Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Son of David, have mercy on us.

And when he entered the house, the blind men approached him: and Jesus asked them, Do you believe that I am able to do this? They said to him, Yes, Lord.

Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

And their eyes were opened; and Jesus warned them sternly, saying, See that no one knows about this.

But when they had left, they spread his fame throughout that area.

While they were going out, a demon-possessed man who was mute was brought to him.

And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke: and the multitudes marveled, saying, Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.

But the Pharisees said, He casts out devils through the prince of the devils.

¶ And Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were distressed, and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is truly abundant, but the workers are few;

Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest, asking him to send forth workers into his harvest.
