THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 8

¶ When he came down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

And, a leper came and bowed before him, saying, Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.

And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I am willing; be clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

And Jesus said to him, See that you do not tell anyone; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.

¶ And when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him,

Saying, Lord, my servant lies at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

And Jesus said to him, I will come and heal him.

But the centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof: but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it.

When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to those who followed, I tell you truly, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.

And I tell you, That many will come from the east and west, and will sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

But the children of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness: where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

And Jesus said to the centurion, Go your way; and let it be done to you, as you have believed. And his servant was healed in that same hour.

¶ And when Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying there, sick with a fever.

And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she got up, and began waiting on him.

When the evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all who were sick:

So that the words of Isaiah the prophet, He himself took our infirmities, and bore our sicknesses, might be fulfilled.

¶ Now when Jesus saw large crowds around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side.

And a certain scribe approached him, and said, Master, I will follow you wherever you go.

And Jesus replied, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has no place to lay his head.

And another of his disciples said to him, Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.

But Jesus said to him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.

¶ And when he had entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.

And, behold, a great tempest arose in the sea, so that waves swept over the boat: but Jesus was asleep.

And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we are going to drown.

And he said, Why are you afraid, O you of little faith? Then he got up, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

But the men marveled, saying, What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

¶ And when he arrived on the other side in the region of the Gergesenes, two men who were demon-possessed met him, as they were coming out of the tombs, they were so violent, that no one could pass that way.

And, they cried out, saying, What do we have to do with you, Jesus, Son of God? have you come here to torment us before the time?

And some distance from them a large herd of pigs were feeding.

So the devils pleaded with him, saying, If you cast us out, allow us to enter the herd of pigs.

And he said to them, Go. And when they left, they entered the herd of pigs: and, the entire herd ran violently down a steep bank into the sea, and died in the water.

And those tending the pigs fled, and went into the town, and reported all this, including what happened to the demon-possessed men.

Then, the whole town came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they pleaded with him to depart from their region.
