THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 4

¶ Then the Spirit led Jesus up into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

And after fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

And when the tempter came to him, he said, If you are the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

Then the devil took him up to the holy city, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple,

And said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down: for it is written, He will give his angels charge concerning you: and they will bear you up in their hands, lest you at any time strike your foot against a stone.

Jesus said to him, It is also written, You shall not tempt the Lord your God.

Again, the devil took him up onto a very high mountain, and showed him all of the kingdoms of the world, and their splendor;

And said to him, I will give you all of this, if you will fall down and worship me.

Then Jesus said to him, Go away, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.

Then the devil left him, and, behold, angels came and served him.

¶ Now when Jesus heard that John had been thrown into prison, he returned to Galilee;

And leaving Nazareth, he arrived and stayed in Capernaum, which is on the sea coast, in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali:

Thus fulfilling what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, who said

The land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, along the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

The people who sat in darkness saw a great light; and on those living in the land of the shadow of death light has risen up.

From then on Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

¶ And Jesus, when walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishermen.

And he said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

And they immediately left their nets, and followed him.

And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

¶ And Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sort of disease and every sort of ailment among the people.

And his fame spread throughout all of Syria: and they brought to him all who were sick with various diseases and in pain, and those who were possessed by demons, and epileptics, and paralytics; and he healed them.

And large crowds of people from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan followed him.
