THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 19

¶ And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he left Galilee, and went into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan;

And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.

¶ The Pharisees also came to him, tempting him, by asking him, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for every reason?

And answering he said to them, Have you not read, that he who made them at the beginning made them male and female,

And said, For this reason a man will leave father and mother, and will be united to his wife: and the two will be one flesh?

Accordingly they are no more two, but one. Therefore, do not let man separate what God has joined together.

Why then, they asked, did Moses command to give her a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?

He said to them, Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

But I tell you, Whoever divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another, commits adultery: and whoever marries her who is put away commits adultery.

His disciples said to him, If that is the situation between a man and his wife, it is not advisable to marry.

But he said to them, All men cannot receive that saying, but only those to whom it is given.

For there are eunuchs, who were born that way from their mother’s womb: and there are eunuchs, who were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive it, let him receive it.

¶ Then little children were brought to him, in order that he might put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

But Jesus said, Allow little children to come to me, and do not forbid them: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

And having laid his hands on them, he departed from there.

¶ And, behold, one came and said to him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

And he said to him, Why do you call me good? there is only one who is good, that is, God: but if you want to enter life, keep the commandments.

He asked him, Which? Jesus said, You will not murder, You will not commit adultery, You will not steal, You will not bear false witness,

Honor your father and mother: and, You will love your neighbor as yourself.

The young man said to him, I have kept all these things from my youth up: what do I yet lack?

Jesus answered, If you want to be perfect, go and sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: because he had much property.

¶ Then Jesus said to his disciples, I tell you truly, It is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

And I say to you again, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

When his disciples heard it, they were greatly shocked, saying, Who then can be saved?

But Jesus looked at them, and said to them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Then Peter spoke up and said to him, Behold, we have left everything, and followed you; what then will we have?

And Jesus said to them, I tell you truly, That at the renewal of all things when the Son of man sits on his throne in heavenly glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

And everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit everlasting life.

  1. But many who are first will be last; and the last will be first.

[Note: Verse 17 Those who keep God’s commandments, admit their sin. Those who deny their sin are refusing to hear what the commandments say (Romans 3:20). Verse 21 A man would have to have faith in Jesus, to give away his possessions and follow Him.]
