THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 18

¶ At the same time the disciples came to Jesus, asking, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

And Jesus called a little child to him, and set him in the midst of them,

And said, I tell you truly, Unless you are converted, and become like little children, you will not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Therefore whoever will humble himself like this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

And whoever will receive one such little child in my name receives me.

But whoever offends one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

¶ Woe to the world because of offences! for it is inevitable that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence comes!

Therefore if your hand or your foot offends you, cut it off, and throw it away: it is better for you to enter into life crippled or maimed, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into everlasting fire.

And if your eye offends you, pluck it out, and throw it away: it is better for you to enter into life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell fire.

Be careful that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I am telling you, That in heaven their angels continually behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

For the Son of man has come to save that which was lost.

What do you think? if a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine, and go into the mountains seeking the one that has gone astray?

And if it happens that he finds it, I tell you truly, he rejoices more over that sheep, than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.

In the same way it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should be lost.

¶ If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone: if he will hear you, you have gained your brother.

But if he will not listen, then take one or two others with you, so that every word may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church: but if he refuses to hear the church, let him be to you as an heathen man and a publican.

I tell you truly, Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Again I tell you, That if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

¶ Then Peter came forward, and said, Lord, how often shall I forgive my brother, when he sins against me? seven times?

Jesus answered, I am not saying, Up to seven times: but, Up to seventy times seven.

Therefore is the kingdom of heaven like a certain king, who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.

And when he had begun to settle up, one was brought to him, who owed him ten thousand talents.

But since he was unable to pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, and children, and all that he had, to repay the debt.

Therefore the servant fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.

Then that servant’s master was moved with compassion, and set him free, and forgave him the debt.

But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, who owed him a day’s pay: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me what you owe.

And his fellow servant fell down at his feet, and pleaded with him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.

But he refused: Instead he threw him into prison, until he would pay the debt.

So when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and went and told their master everything that happened.

Then his master, after calling him, said to him, O you wicked servant, I forgave you all your debt, because you wanted me to:

Should you not have likewise had compassion on your fellow servant, even as I had pity on you?

And his master was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors, until he would pay back everything that he owed.

So likewise shall my heavenly Father also do to you, if every one of you does not, from the heart, forgive his brother his trespasses.

[Note: Verses 8-9 tell us that something that offends is something that causes someone to wind up in hell.]
