THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 17

¶ And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John, and led them up onto an high mountain alone,

And was transfigured before them: and his face shone as the sun, and his clothing became as white as the light.

And, behold, Moses and Elias appeared to them there, talking with him.

Then Peter, said to Jesus, Lord, it is good that we are here: if you wish, let us make three tabernacles here; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and a voice from the cloud, said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to him.

And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were painfully afraid.

And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and do not be afraid.

And when they looked up, they saw no one, other than Jesus.

And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus cautioned them, saying, Do not tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of man has risen from the dead.

And his disciples asked him, Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?

And Jesus in answer said to them, Elijah truly will first come, and restore all things.

But I am telling you, That Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him whatever they wanted. In the same way the Son of man will also suffer at their hands.

Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

¶ And when they approached the crowd, a certain man came to him, and knelt before him, and said,

Lord, have mercy on my son: for he has seizures, and suffers terribly: for he often falls into the fire, or into the water.

And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him.

Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? how long will I have to put up with you? bring him here to me.

And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he came out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, Why couldn’t we cast him out?

And Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief: for I tell you truly, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there; and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

But this kind does not go out except through prayer and fasting.

¶ And while they remained in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The Son of man will be betrayed into the hands of men:

And they will kill him, and the third day he will be raised again. And they were deeply distressed.

¶ And when they arrived at Capernaum, those who collected taxes came to Peter, and said, Doesn’t your master pay the tax?

He said, Yes he does. And when Peter entered the house, Jesus spoke first, saying, What do you think, Simon? from whom do the kings of the earth collect duty or taxes? from their own children, or from strangers?

Peter said to him, From strangers. Jesus said to him, Then the children are free.

Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the lake, and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that you catch; and when you have opened its mouth, you will find a coin: take it, and give to them for both of us.
