THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 16

¶ The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus, and to test him asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

In response he said to them, When it is evening, you say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

And in the morning, It will be foul weather today: for the sky is red and overcast. O hypocrites, you can understand the appearance of the sky; can’t you understand the signs of the times?

A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign; but no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. And he left them, and went away.

¶ Now when his disciples got to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

So when Jesus said to them, Be alert and on guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

They reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we did not bring bread.

But Jesus being aware of this, said to them, O you of little faith, why are you reasoning among yourselves, because you have not brought bread?

Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

How is it that you do not understand that I was not talking about bread, when I said you should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?

Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the leaven of bread, but against the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

¶ When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I the Son of man am?

And they said, Some say that you are John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.

He then asked them, But who do you say I am?

And Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.

And Jesus said to him in response, You are blessed, Simon Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood has not revealed it to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

Moreover I also say to you, That is the foundation upon which I will build my church; and the gates of hell will not prevail against it, and you are one stone.

And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whoever you will bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whoever you will loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

¶ From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples, that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

Then Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from you, Lord: this will never happen to you.

But he turned, and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan: you are tempting me to sin: for you are not thinking as God thinks, but as men think.

¶ Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it: and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

For what does a man profit, if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

For the Son of man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he will reward every man according to his works.

I tell you truly, There are some standing here, who will not taste death, before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
