THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 13

¶ The same day Jesus went out of the house, and sat by the sea side.

And large crowds gathered around him, so he got into a boat, and sat in it; while all the people stood on the shore.

Then he told them many things in parables, saying, Behold, a farmer went forth to sow seed;

And as he sowed, some seeds fell by the road side, and the birds came and ate them:

Some fell upon rocky places, where they did not have much soil: and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil:

But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

And some fell among the thorns; and the thorns sprang up, and choked them:

But others fell on good ground, and brought forth fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

Who has ears to hear, let him hear.

And the disciples came, and asked him, Why do you speak to them in parables?

In answer he said, Because the knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but it has not been given to them.

For whoever has, will be given more, and he will have an abundance: but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

Therefore I speak to them in parables: because seeing they see not; and hearing they hear not, nor do they understand.

And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, who said, In hearing you will hear, but will not understand; and seeing you will see, but will not perceive:

For this people’s heart has grown dull, their ears are slow of hearing, and they have closed their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I would heal them.

But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

For I tell you truly, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them; and to hear the things that you hear, and have not heard them.

Therefore listen as I explain the parable of the sower.

When any one hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, the wicked one comes, and snatches away that which was sown in his heart. This is the seed that fell by the road side.

But he who received the seed sown in stony places, is he who hears the word, and immediately receives it with joy;

Yet because he has no root, he lasts only a short time: for when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, he quickly falls away.

Likewise, he who received the seed sown among the thorns is he who hears the word; and the concerns of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, making it unfruitful.

But he who received seed sown in good ground is he who hears the word, and understands it; who indeed bears fruit, and brings forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

¶ Jesus then told them another parable, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field:

But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went his way.

But when the wheat sprouted, and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

So the owners servants came to him and said, Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? where then did the weeds come from?

He said to them, An enemy did this. The servants then asked him, Do you want us to go and pull them up?

But he said, No; lest while you are pulling up the weeds, you root the wheat up with them.

Let both grow together until the harvest: and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather the weeds together first, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

He then told them another parable, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, that a man took, and planted in his field:

Which is the smallest of all the seeds: but after it has grown, it is the largest of the garden plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.

He then told them another parable; The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast, that a woman hid in three measures of flour, till all of it had risen.

Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; and he did not say anything to them without a parable:

That the words of the prophet, who said, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world, might be fulfilled.

Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came to him, saying, Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.

He answered by saying, He who sowed the good seed is the Son of man;

The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the weeds are the children of the wicked one;

The enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

Therefore as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire; so it will be at the end of this world.

The Son of man will send forth his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom those who sin, and all who lead others to sin;

And will throw them into a furnace of fire: where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.

Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who has ears to hear, let him hear.

¶ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field; which a man, having found, hid, and in his joy went and sold everything that he had, and bought that field.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant, seeking fine pearls:

Who, when he found one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered in fish of every kind:

Which, when it was full, they pulled to shore, and having sat down, gathered the good fish into containers, but threw the bad away.

That is how it will be at the end of the world: the angels will come forth, and separate the wicked from the righteous,

And will throw them into the furnace of fire: there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.

Jesus asked them, Have you understood all these things? And they replied, Yes, Lord.

Then he said to them, Therefore every student of Scripture who has been instructed as a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a homeowner, who brings out of his repository things new and old.

¶ And it so happened, that when Jesus finished these parables, he left that place.

And coming to his home town, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed, and asked, Where did this man get this wisdom, and these mighty works?

Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother called Mary? and his brothers, James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Juda?

And aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?

And they were offended at him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house.

And he did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
