THE BOOK OF MARK

Mark Chapter 9

¶ And he said to them, I tell you truly, That there are some standing here, who will not taste death, before they see the kingdom of God come with power.

And after six days Jesus took Peter, and James, and John with him, and led them up onto an high mountain by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

And his raiment became shining, extremely white like snow; whiter than any laundry on earth could make them.

And Elijah appeared to them along with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.

And Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good that we are here: let us make three tabernacles; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

For he did not know what to say; for they were terrified.

Then a cloud overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

And suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them, except Jesus.

And as they came down from the mountain, he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what they had seen, until the Son of man had risen from the dead.

And they kept that matter to themselves, discussing with one another what rising from the dead meant.

And they asked him, Why the scribes say that Elijah must come first?

And he said, It is true that Elijah comes first, and restores everything; why then is it written that the Son of man, must suffer many things, and be rejected.

But I am telling you, That Elijah has already come, and they have done to him whatever they pleased, just as it is written about him.

¶ And when he got back to the other disciples, he saw a large crowd around them, and the scribes disputing with them.

And as soon as the people saw Jesus, they were amazed, and ran to greet him.

And he asked the scribes, What are you discussing with them?

And someone in the crowd said, Master, I brought my son to you, who has a spirit that makes him mute;

And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down: and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth, and wastes away: and I asked your disciples to cast the spirit out; but they could not.

He replied, saying, O faithless generation, how long will I be with you? how long will I put up with you? bring him to me.

So they brought him to him: and when he saw him, the spirit immediately seized him; and he fell to the ground, and rolled about foaming at the mouth.

And he asked the boy’s father, How long he been like this? And he said, Since he was a child.

And it has often thrown him into the fire, and into the water, to destroy him: but if you can do anything, have pity on us, and help us.

Jesus said to him, If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.

And the boys father immediately cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.

When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying to him, You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, to come out of him, and never enter him again.

And the spirit shrieked, and convulsing him violently, came out of him: and the boy became still like one who is dead; so many said, He is dead.

But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he stood up.

After Jesus had entered a house, his disciples asked him privately, Why couldn’t we cast him out?

And he said to them, This kind cannot come out by anything, but prayer and fasting.

¶ And they left that place, and passed through Galilee; and Jesus did not want anyone to know.

Because he was teaching his disciples, and telling them, The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and after he is killed, he will rise from the dead on the third day.

But they did not understand what he said, and were afraid to ask him.

And they arrived at Capernaum: and when he was in the house he asked them, What were you arguing about along the way?

But they remained silent: for along the way they had disputed among themselves, as to who was the greatest.

And he sat down, and called the twelve, and said to them, If any man wants to be first, he will be last of all, and servant of all.

And he took a child, and placed him in their midst: and taking him into his arms, he said,

Whoever receives one such child in my name, is receiving me: and whoever receives me, is not receiving me, but him who sent me.

And John said, Master, we saw someone casting out devils in your name, who was not one of us: and we told him to stop, because he is not following us.

But Jesus said, Do not stop him: for no one who does a miracle in my name, can turn around and speak evil of me.

For he who is not against us is for us.

¶ For I tell you truly, whoever gives you a cup of water in my name, because you belong to Christ, will not lose his reward.

And it would be better for anyone who offends one of these little ones who believe in me, if he had been cast into the sea, with a millstone tied around his neck.

If your hand offends you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than to go into hell having two hands, into the fire that will never be put out:

Where their worm does not die, and the fire is never put out.

And if your foot offends you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than to be cast into hell having two feet, into the fire that will never be put out:

Where their worm does not die, and the fire is never put out.

And if your eye offends you, pluck it out: it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than to be cast into hell fire having two eyes:

Where their worm does not die, and the fire is never put out.

For every one will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be salted with salt.

Salt is good: but if the salt has lost its saltiness, what will you season it with? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another.
