THE BOOK OF MARK

Mark Chapter 8

¶ During that time there was again a large crowd, and since they had nothing to eat, Jesus summoned his disciples, and said to them,

I am concerned about these people, because they have been with me for three days now, and have nothing to eat:

And if I send them home hungry, they may collapse along the way: for some of them came a long distance.

And his disciples answered, Where can anyone get enough bread in this remote place to satisfy these people?

And Jesus asked them, How many loaves do you have? And they said, Seven.

And he told the people to sit down on the ground: and after taking the seven loaves, and giving thanks, he broke them, and continued giving broken pieces to his disciples to set before the people; and they placed them before the multitude.

And they also had a few small fish: and having blessed them, he told his disciples to also pass them out.

So they ate, and were filled: and they gathered up seven baskets of broken pieces that were left over.

Now there were about four thousand who had eaten: and he sent them away.

¶ And he immediately got into the boat with his disciples, and went to the region of Dalmanutha.

And the Pharisees came out, and began to dispute with him, seeking a sign from heaven from him, to test him.

And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, Why does this generation seek after a sign? I tell you truly, No sign will be given to this generation.

Then he left them, and getting back into the boat crossed to the other side.

Now the disciples had forgotten to bring bread, and except for one loaf had nothing with them in the boat.

And Jesus warned them, saying, Be on your guard, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of Herod.

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, He said that because we have no bread.

And when Jesus knew it, he said to them, Why are you reasoning, about the fact that you have no bread? do you not yet see, or understand? are your hearts hardened?

Having eyes, do you not see? and having ears, do you not hear? and do you not remember?

When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you pick up? They said to him, Twelve.

And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you pick up? And they said, Seven.

And he said to them, How is it then that you do not understand?

¶ And they came to Bethsaida; and certain people brought a blind man to Jesus, and begged him to touch him.

And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands on him, he asked him if he saw anything.

And he looked up, and said, I see men like trees, walking.

Then he put his hands on his eyes again, and had him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.

And he sent him away to his house, saying, Do not go into the town, or tell anyone in the town.

¶ Jesus, and his disciples, went on to the towns around Caesarea Philippi: and along the way he questioned his disciples, asking them, Who do people say that I am?

And they answered, some say John the Baptist: but others say, Elijah; and others, One of the prophets.

And he said to them, But who do you say that I am? And Peter answering said, You are the Christ.

And he strictly warned them not to tell anyone about him.

Then he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

He spoke plainly about this. And Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him.

But after he had turned around and was looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get behind me, Satan: for your mind is not fixed on the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.

And having called to himself the multitude along with his disciples, he said to them, If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever will lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, will save it.

For what does it benefit a man, to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

Therefore if any man is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; the Son of man will also be ashamed of him, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
