THE BOOK OF MARK

Mark Chapter 7

¶ Then the Pharisees, and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, gathered around Jesus.

For they had seen some of his disciples eating their bread with impure, that is, with unwashed, hands, and found fault with it.

For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat, unless they carefully wash their hands, in keeping with the tradition of the elders.

And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat, unless they wash. And there are many other traditions, that they have received and observe, such as the washing of cups, pitchers, copper pots, and tables.

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why are your disciples eating with unwashed hands, instead of walking according to the tradition of the elders?

In reply he said to them, Isaiah was right when he prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

They worship me in vain, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

For you disregard the commandment of God, and hold to the tradition of men, such as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such things.

And he said to them, You completely invalidate the commandment of God, in order to keep your tradition.

For Moses said, Honor your father and mother; and, Anyone who curses his father or mother, let him be put to death:

But you say, If a man will say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is a gift, by which you might profit by me; he shall be free.

And you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother;

Making the word of God of no effect through your tradition, that you have handed down: and you do many things like that.

And summoning the multitude, he said, Listen to me every one of you, and understand:

There is nothing outside of a man, that can defile him by going into him: but the things that come out of him, are the things that defile him.

If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.

And after he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable.

And he said to them, Are you also devoid of understanding? Don’t you realize, that whatever enters a man from the outside, cannot defile him;

Because it does not enter his heart, but his stomach, and is eliminated in the waste, making all food clean?

And he went on to say, That which goes out of a man, that defiles a man.

For from within, out of men’s hearts, proceed evil thoughts, adultery, fornication, murder,

Theft, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness:

All these evil things come from within, and defile a man.

¶ Then Jesus having arisen left, and went to the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon, and having entered a house, did not want anyone to know it: but he was not able to escape notice.

For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:

The woman was a gentile, a Syrophenician by nation; and she begged Jesus to cast the demon out of her daughter.

But Jesus said to her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not fitting to take the children’s bread, and throw it to the dogs.

And she replied, Yes, Lord: but even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.

And he said to her, Because you said this go your way; the demon has left your daughter.

And when she got back to her house, she found her daughter lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

¶ Then, leaving the vicinity of Tyre, Jesus went through Sidon to the sea of Galilee, and into the region of Decapolis.

And they brought to him one who was deaf, and could not speak intelligibly; and they begged him to place his hand on him.

And taking him aside away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears, and having spit, touched his tongue;

And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, Ephphatha, which means, Be opened.

And immediately his ears were opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak plainly.

And he ordered the people not to tell anyone: but the more he forbade them, the more widely they proclaimed it;

And they were utterly astonished, saying, He has done everything well: he makes the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
