THE BOOK OF MARK

Mark Chapter 15

¶ As soon as it was morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders, the scribes and the entire Sanhedrin, and after tying Jesus’ hands, led him away, and delivered him to Pilate.

And Pilate asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he answered, It is as you say.

And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he made no reply.

So Pilate again asked him, Have you no answer? look at how many accusations they are bringing against you.

But Jesus still said nothing; and Pilate was amazed.

Now at that festival Pilate would release one prisoner, whoever they wanted.

And there was one named Barabbas, who had committed murder during an insurrection, and was in prison along with those involved in insurrection with him.

And the throng came up and started to ask Pilate to do what he usually did for them.

But Pilate answered them, by asking, Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?

Because he knew that the chief priests had handed Jesus over because they were jealous.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, to get him to release Barabbas for them instead.

And Pilate responded by asking, What then shall I shall do with the one you call the King of the Jews?

And they again shouted, Crucify him.

Then Pilate asked, Why, what evil has he done? And they shouted all the more, Crucify him.

¶ And so Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them, and after having Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified.

And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called the Praetorium; and called the entire company together.

And they put a purple robe on him, and wove a crown of thorns, and put it on his head,

And began to call out to him, Hail, King of the Jews!

And they hit him on the head with a reed, and spit on him, and falling on their knees worshipped him.

And after they had mocked him, they took the purple robe off of him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

And they compelled Simon a Cyrenian, who was passing by on his way in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.

¶ And they brought him to the place called Golgotha, which means, The place of a skull.

Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh to drink: but he refused it.

And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothing, by casting lots for them, to see what each one should get.

And it was the third hour, when they crucified him.

And the inscription over him listing the charges read, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

And they crucified two thieves with him; one at his right hand, and the other at his left.

Thus fulfilling the scripture, that says, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

And those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying, Ah, you who destroy the temple, and build it in three days,

Save yourself, and come down from the cross.

In the same way the chief priests and scribes mocked him among themselves saying, He saved others; but cannot save himself.

Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And those who were crucified with him also mocked him.

¶ And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which translated means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

And some of those who stood by, upon hearing it, said, Listen, he calls Elijah.

And one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, Leave him alone now; let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.

And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

And the veil of the temple was ripped in two from the top to the bottom.

And when the centurion, who stood in front of him, heard his cry, and saw him die, he said, Surely this man was God’s Son.

There were also women watching from a distance: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome;

(Who, when he was in Galilee, used to follow him, and cared for his needs;) and many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.

¶ Now when the evening had come, because it was the day of preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent member of the council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

And Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead: and summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.

And when he was told by the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.

And he bought fine linen, and took Jesus down, and wrapped him in the linen, and placed him in a tomb that had been cut into the rock, and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.

And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
