THE BOOK OF MARK

Mark Chapter 10

¶ Jesus then left that place, and went into the region of Judea by the far side of the Jordan: and the people again came to him; and he taught them, as was his custom.

And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.

And in response he asked them, What did Moses command you?

And they said, Moses permitted a man to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.

And Jesus replied, It was because of the hardness of your heart that Moses wrote you that law.

But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.

For that reason a man will leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife;

And they being two will be one flesh: so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.

Therefore what God has joined together, let not man put asunder.

And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.

And he said to them, Whoever divorces his wife, and marries another, commits adultery against her.

And if a woman divorces her husband, and marries another, she commits adultery.

¶ And they brought young children to him, so that he might touch them: and his disciples rebuked those who brought them.

But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant, and said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them: for of such is the kingdom of God.

I tell you truly, Whoever will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child, will never enter it.

And he took them up in his arms, put his hands on them, and blessed them.

¶ And when he had started on his way, a man ran up to him, and kneeled before him, and asked him, Good Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? no one is good but one, that is, God.

You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.

In response he said to him, Master, I have observed all these things from my youth.

Then looking at him Jesus loved him, and said to him, You lack one thing: go your way, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

And upon hearing that he became sad, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

And Jesus looked around, and said to his disciples, How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!

And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus continued, saying, Children, how hard is it for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

And they were astonished beyond measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?

And Jesus looking at them said, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

Then Peter said to him, We have left everything, and have followed you.

And Jesus replied, I tell you truly, There is no one who has left home, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,

Who will not receive a hundred times as much in this present age, homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and lands, with persecution; and in the world to come eternal life.

But many who are now first will be last; and the last first.

¶ And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was leading the way: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he again took the twelve aside, and began to tell them what would happen to him,

Saying, Look, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the high priests, and to the scribes; and they will condemn him to death, and will deliver him to the Gentiles:

And they will mock him, and scourge him, and spit upon him, and kill him: and after three days he will rise again.

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him, saying, Master, we want you to grant us a request.

And he said to them, What do you want me to do for you?

They replied, Grant that one of us may sit at your right hand, and the other at your left, in your glory.

But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking: can you drink of the cup that I drink of? or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

And they answered, We can. And Jesus said to them, You will indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with:

But to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to give; but it will be given to those for whom it is prepared.

And when the ten heard it, they became indignant with James and John.

But Jesus called them over, and said to them, You know that those who are regarded as rulers over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones wield authority over them.

But among you that will not so: instead whoever wants to be great among you, will be your servant:

And whoever wants to be first among you, will be the servant of all.

For even the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.

¶ Then they came to Jericho: and as Jesus was leaving Jericho together with his disciples and a large number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the side of the highway begging.

And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, shouting, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.

And many ordered him to be quiet: but he shouted all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me.

And Jesus stopped, and said call him. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Have courage, get up; he is calling for you.

And, casting aside his cloak, he got up, and came to Jesus.

And Jesus answering him said, What do you want me to do for you? And the blind man said to him, Lord, I want to see.

  1. And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has made you whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus along the road.
