THE BOOK OF LUKE

Luke Chapter 9

¶ Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

And he told them, Take nothing for your journey, no staff, no pouch, no bread, no money; not even two tunics.

And remain in whatever house you enter, going out from there until you leave.

And as for those who will not receive you, when you leave their town, shake the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.

And they left, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing people everywhere.

Now Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that Jesus had done: and he was perplexed, because it was said by some, that John had risen from the dead;

And by others, that Elijah had appeared; and still others, that one of the old prophets had risen again.

But Herod said, I have beheaded John: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he wanted to see him.

¶ And when the apostles returned, they told him all that they had done. And he took them, and withdrew privately to a secluded place near a town called Bethsaida.

And when the people learned about it, they followed him: and he welcomed them, and spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.

Now when the day began to draw to a close, the twelve said to him, Send the crowd away, so they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside, and find food and lodging: for we are in a secluded place.

But he said to them, You give them something to eat. And they said, We have no more than five loaves and two fish; unless we go and buy food for all these people.

For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Have them sit down in groups of fifty.

And they did so, and made them all sit down.

Then taking the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.

And they all ate, and were filled: and twelve baskets of left over broken pieces were gathered up.

¶ And it came to pass, that while he was praying alone, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, Who do the people say that I am?

And they answered, some say John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and still others say, that one of the old prophets has risen again.

But he asked them, Who do you say that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

And he warned them, and instructed them not to tell that to anyone;

Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders chief priests and scribes, and he must be killed, and be raised up on the third day.

Then he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it: but whoever loses his life for my sake, will save it.

For what does a man achieve, if he gains the whole world, and loses himself, or is cast away?

For if anyone is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of man will be ashamed of him, when he comes in his own glory, and in the glory of his Father, and the holy angels.

But I tell you the truth, some who are standing here, will not taste death, before they see the kingdom of God.

¶ Now it happened that about eight days after saying these things, he took Peter and John and James, and went up onto a mountain to pray.

And as he prayed, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothing became white and shining.

And, behold, two men were talking with him, and they were Moses and Elijah:

Who appearing in glory, were speaking of his departure which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

Now Peter and those who were with him had been in a deep sleep: but when they awakened, they saw his glory, and the two men standing with him.

And as the men were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good that we are here: let us make three tabernacles; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah: not realizing what he was saying.

And while he was saying this, a cloud enveloped them: and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.

And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

And after the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. And they kept it to themselves, and at that time did not tell anyone about the things that they had seen.

¶ On the next day, after they came down from the mountain, many people met him.

And a man in the crowd cried out, saying, Master, I beg you, to look at my son: for he is my only child.

And, lo, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly screams; and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming, and it departs from him with difficulty, bruising him.

And I pleaded with your disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverted generation, how long will I be with you, and endure you? Bring your son here.

And as he was coming, the devil threw him down, and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and gave him back to his father.

¶ And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while everyone was marveling at all of the things Jesus did, he said to his disciples,

Let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.

But they did not understand that statement, and it was hidden from them, so that they might not grasp it: and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Then an argument started among them, as to which of them should be the greatest.

And Jesus, knowing what they were thinking, took a child, and stood him by his side,

And said to them, Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me: and whoever welcomes me welcomes him who sent me: for he who is least among you all, he is the greatest.

And John said, Master, we saw someone casting out devils in your name; and we commanded him to stop, because he is not one of us.

And Jesus said to him, Do not tell him to stop: for he who is not against us is for us.

¶ Now it came to pass, as the time for him to be taken up approached, he resolutely set his face to go to Jerusalem,

And sent messengers on ahead: and they went into a Samaritan village, to get things ready for him.

But they did not welcome him, because he was going to Jerusalem.

And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, like Elijah did?

But he turned, and rebuked them, saying, You do not know what sort of spirit you are of.

For the Son of man has not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

¶ And it so happened, that, as they were going along the road, a certain man said to Jesus, Lord, I will follow you wherever you go.

And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has no place to lay his head.

And he said to another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, allow me to first go and bury my father.

But Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their dead: but you go and preach the kingdom of God.

Still another said, Lord, I will follow you; but let me first go and say good-bye, to those in my home.

But Jesus said to him, No man, who puts his hand to the plough, and looks back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
