THE BOOK OF LUKE

Luke Chapter 8

¶ After that, Jesus went from one city and village to another, preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,

And also some women, who had been healed of evil spirits and illnesses, Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven devils were expelled,

And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, who were supporting them out of their own means.

¶ While a large crowd was gathering, and people were coming to him from various towns, he told this parable:

A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and was trampled under foot, and the birds of the air ate it.

And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.

And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.

Other seeds fell on good ground, and sprang up, and yielded a one-hundred fold increase. And when he had said these things, he called out, He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

And his disciples asked him, What is the meaning of this parable?

And he said, To you it is granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others I speak in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

Now the meaning of the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Those by the way side are those who hear; then the devil comes, and removes the word from their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

Those on the rock are those, who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but having no root, believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away.

The seed that fell among thorns are those, who, after they have heard, go their way, and are choked by life’s worries, riches, and pleasures, and bring no fruit to maturity.

But that which fell on the good ground are those, who in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, retain it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

No one, after lighting a candle, covers it with a container, or puts it under a bed; but places it on a candlestick, so that those who come in can see the light.

For there is nothing secret, that will not be revealed; nor anything hidden, that will not be known and come to light.

Therefore be careful how you listen: for whoever has, will be given more; and whoever does not have, will have even what he thinks he has taken from him.

Then his mother and his brothers came to him, and were unable to get to him because of the crowd.

And someone told him, Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.

And he replied by saying, My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God, and do it.

¶ Now it so happened that on a certain day, when Jesus and his disciples got into a boat: he said to them, Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake. And they set out.

But as they were sailing he fell asleep: then a violent windstorm came down on the lake; and the boat was filling with water, and they were in great danger.

And the disciples went to him, and woke him, saying, Master, master, we are going to die. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.

And he said to them, Where is your faith? But being frightened and amazed, they asked one another, What sort of man is this! for he even commands the winds and water, and they obey him.

And they sailed down to the country of the Gadarenes, which is across from Galilee.

And when Jesus stepped out onto the shore, he was met by a certain man from the town, who was possessed by demons, and had not worn clothes or lived in a house for a long time, but lived in the tombs.

When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What do I have to do with you, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I beg you, do not torment me.

(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For many times it had seized him: and even though he was bound with chains and in shackles and kept under guard; he had broken his chains, and was driven by the devil into isolated places.)

And Jesus asked him, What is your name? And he said, Legion: for many demons had entered him.

And they begged him not to order them to go into the bottomless pit.

And there was a large herd of pigs feeding on the mountain: and they begged him to allow them to enter into them. And he allowed them.

Then the devils left the man, and entered the pigs: and the herd ran violently down a steep bank into the lake, and were drowned.

When those who tended the pigs saw what had happened, they fled, and told what had happened in the town and countryside.

Then they went out to see what had happened; and came to Jesus, and found the man, from whom the devils had gone out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

And those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been healed.

Then all the people of the region of the Gadarenes asked Jesus to leave them; because they were gripped with fear: so he got into the boat, and returned.

Now the man from whom the devils had gone out begged Jesus to let him go with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,

Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you. And he went his way, proclaiming throughout the town all that Jesus had done for him.

¶ Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him: for they had all been waiting for him.

And, behold, a man named Jairus, who was an official of the synagogue: came and fell down at Jesus’ feet, and begged him to come to his house:

For his only daughter, who was about twelve years of age, lay dying. But as he was going the people crowded around him.

And a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years, who had spent all she had on doctors, and was not able to be healed by anyone,

Came behind him, and touched the edge of his garment: and immediately her bleeding stopped.

And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you, and you ask, Who touched me?

And Jesus said, Somebody has touched me: for I was aware that power went out of me.

And when the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling, and falling down before him, told him in front of everyone why she had touched him, and how she had been instantly healed.

Then he said to her, Daughter, be comforted: your faith has delivered you; go in peace.

While he was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Master.

But when Jesus heard it, he said, Do not be afraid: only believe, and she will be healed.

And when he entered the house, he did not allow anyone to go in, except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl.

Meanwhile they were all weeping, and lamenting for her: but he said, Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeps.

And they laughed at him scornfully, knowing that she was dead.

And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Child, arise.

And her spirit came again, and she stood up at once: and he gave orders that she be given something to eat.

And her parents were astonished: but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
