THE BOOK OF LUKE

Luke Chapter 4

¶ Then Jesus returned from the Jordan full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit into the desert,

Where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. During those days he did not eat anything: and after they ended, he was hungry.

Then the devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.

But Jesus answered, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Then the devil, taking him up onto an high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

And the devil said to him, I will give you all of their power and glory: for it has been given to me; and I can give it to anyone I wish.

If you will worship me, it will all be yours.

And Jesus said, Get behind me, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.

Then the devil brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here:

For it is written, He will give his angels charge over you, to keep you:

And they will lift you up in their hands, lest at any time you strike your foot against a stone.

And Jesus answered, It has been said, You shall not tempt the Lord your God.

And when the devil had finished all these temptations, he left him until a better time.

¶ And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit: and his fame spread through all the region around.

And he taught in their synagogues, and was praised by everyone.

And he went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read.

And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. And when he opened it, he found the place where it is written,

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight for the blind, to free those who are oppressed,

To proclaim the year of the Lord’s acceptance.

And he closed the scroll, and returned it to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.

And he said to them, Today you have heard this scripture fulfilled.

And all bore witness, and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. And they said, Isn’t this Joseph’s son?

And he said to them, You will doubtless quote to me the proverb, Physician, heal yourself: do here in your home town, what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.

And he said, I tell you truly, No prophet is accepted in his home town.

But I assure you, that there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up for three years and six months, and there was a severe famine throughout all the land;

But Elijah was not sent to any of them, other than to a widow in Zarephath, a village of Sidon.

And there were many lepers in Israel at the time of Elisha the prophet; yet none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.

And upon hearing this, everyone in the synagogue became furious,

And got up, and pushed him out of the city, and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, in order to throw him down the cliff.

But he passed through the crowd and went his way,

¶ And went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

And in the synagogue there was a man, who had a spirit of an unclean devil, and he yelled out with a loud voice,

Saying, Let us alone; what do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? have you come to destroy us? I know who you are; the Holy One of God.

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be quiet, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown the man down before them all, he came out of him, and did not hurt him.

And they were all amazed, and said to each other, What is this teaching? for with authority and power he gives orders to the unclean spirits, and they come out.

And the news of him spread out into all the surrounding country.

And Jesus left the synagogue, and went into the home of Simon. And the mother of Simon’s wife was suffering from a high fever; and they asked him to help her.

And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and she immediately got up and began waiting on them.

Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus; and laying his hands on each one of them, he healed them.

Moreover demons also came out of many, crying out, and saying, You are Christ the Son of God. And rebuking them he did not allow them to speak: for they knew that he was the Messiah.

And at daybreak, Jesus left and went out to a secluded place: and the people were looking for him, and came up to him, and tried to keep him from leaving them.

But he said, I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also: because that is why I was sent.

And he continued to preach in the synagogues of Galilee.
