THE BOOK OF LUKE

Luke Chapter 22

¶ Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.

And the chief priests and scribes were looking for a way to kill Jesus; for they feared the people.

Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve.

And he went to the chief priests and officers, and conferred with them as to how he might betray Jesus.

And they were delighted, and agreed to give him money.

And he promised to do it, and began to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus when no crowd was around.

¶ Then the day of unleavened bread arrived, when the passover lamb had to be killed.

And Jesus sent Peter and John, telling them to, Go and make preparations for us to eat the passover.

And they asked him, Where do you want us to make the preparations?

And he said, When you enter the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him to the house he enters.

And say to the owner of the house, The Master asks, Where is the guestroom, where I may eat the passover with my disciples?

And he will show you a large furnished upper room: make preparations there.

And they left, and found things just as Jesus had told them: and they made preparations for the passover.

And when the time came, he sat down with the twelve apostles.

And he said to them, I have looked forward to eating this passover with you before I suffer:

For I tell you, I will not eat it again, until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:

For I tell you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine again, until the kingdom of God has come.

And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

In the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

¶ But, be aware, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.

And the Son of man goes to his death, as it was determined: but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!

And they began to discuss among themselves, which of them it might be who was going to do this thing.

And there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be regarded as the greatest.

And he said to them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise control over them; and those who wield authority over them are called benefactors.

But with you that will not be so: Instead let he who is greatest among you, be as the younger; and he who is chief, as one who serves.

For who is greater, the one who sits down to eat, or the one who serves? is it not the one who sits? but I am among you as one who serves.

You are those who have stood by me in my trials.

And I am giving you a kingdom, just as my Father has given to me;

That you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail: and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren.

And Peter said, Lord, I am ready to go with you, both into prison, and to death.

But Jesus answered, I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny that you know me three times.

Then he said to them, When I sent you out without purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything? And they said, No nothing.

Then he said to them, But now, let him who has a purse take it, and likewise his bag: and let him who has no sword, sell his garment, and buy one.

For I am telling you, that these words, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: must yet be fulfilled in me, for the things concerning me have an end.

And they said, Lord, here are two swords. And he replied, That is enough.

¶ Then Jesus went out, as usual, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples followed him.

And when he reached the place, he said to them, Pray that you do not fall into temptation.

And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and kneeled down, and prayed,

Saying, Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done.

And an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.

And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

And when he rose from prayer, and came to his disciples, he found them sleeping because they were sad,

And said unto them, Why are you sleeping? get up and pray, lest you enter into temptation.

¶ And while he yet spoke, a crowd approached, and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, led them, and came near to Jesus to kiss him.

But Jesus said to him, Judas, do you betray the Son of man with a kiss?

When those who were around Jesus saw what was going to happen, they asked, Lord, shall we strike with the sword?

And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

But Jesus answered, No more of this. And he touched the servant’s ear, and healed him.

Then Jesus said to the chief priests, officers of the temple, and elders, who had come to him, Have you come out, as against a thief, with swords and clubs?

When I was daily with you in the temple, you did not lift a hand against me: but this is your hour, when darkness reigns.

¶ Then they seized him, and led him to the high priest’s house. And Peter followed at a distance.

And when they had kindled a fire in the center of the courtyard, and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.

But a certain maid saw him as he sat by the fire, and looked closely at him, and said, This man was also with him.

And he denied him, saying, Woman, I do not know him.

And after a little while someone else saw him, and said, You are also one of them. But Peter replied, Man, I am not.

And about an hour later another confidently said, This fellow was certainly with him: for he is a Galilean.

And Peter said, Man, I do not know what you are talking about. And immediately, while he yet spoke, the rooster crowed.

And the Lord turned, and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the words of the Lord, how he had told him, Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.

And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

¶ And the men who held Jesus mocked him, and hit him.

And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and demanded, Prophesy, who is it that hit you?

And they blasphemously said many other things against him.

And as soon as it was light, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes assembled, and led him to their council chamber, saying,

Are you the Christ? tell us. And he said, If I tell you, you will not believe:

And if I ask you a question, you will not answer me, or let me go.

But from now on the Son of man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.

Then they all asked, Are you then the Son of God? And he said to them, As you say, I am he.

And they said, Why do we need any more witness? for we have heard it ourselves from his own mouth.
