THE BOOK OF JUDGES

Judges Chapter 1

¶ After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked the LORD, Who will be first to go up and fight against the Canaanites for us?

And the LORD said, Judah will go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

And Judah said to Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my allotment, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your allotment. So Simeon went with him.

And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew ten thousand of their men in Bezek.

And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

And Adonibezek said, Seventy kings, with their thumbs and great toes cut off, had to gather their food under my table: as I have done, so God has repaid me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and destroyed it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

¶ Afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, who lived in the hill country, and in the south, and in the valley.

And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron: (now previously the name of Hebron was Kirjatharba:) and they defeated Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

And from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir: previously the name of Debir was Kirjathsepher:

And Caleb said, I will give Achsah my daughter in marriage to whoever attacks Kirjathsepher, and takes it.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter in marriage.

And when she came to him, she got his consent to ask her father for a field: and when she got off her donkey; Caleb asked her, What do you want?

And she said to him, Give me a present: since you have given me a dry land; let me also have springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up with the children of Judah from the city of palm trees into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the south near Arad; and they went and lived among the people.

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. They therefore named the place Hormah.

Judah also took Gaza with its territory, and Askelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.

And the LORD was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the hill country; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said: and he expelled the three sons of Anak from there.

¶ But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites live with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

The house of Joseph, also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.

And the house of Joseph sent spies to Bethel. (Now previously the name of the city was Luz.)

And the spies saw a man come out of the city, and they said to him, Show us, we pray you, the way into the city, and we will show you mercy.

And when he showed them the way into the city, they destroyed the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and his entire family go.

And the man went to the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and named it Luz: which is its name to this day.

Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and its towns, or Taanach and its towns, or the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns: but the Canaanites remained in that aera.

And when Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.

Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived among them, and became tributaries.

Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Accho, or the inhabitants of Zidon, Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob:

But the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, or the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries to them.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill country: for they would not allow them to come down to the valley:

But the Amorites remained on mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and on upward.
