THE BOOK OF JONAH

Jonah Chapter 3

¶ Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying,

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.

So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, as the LORD had said. Now Nineveh was a very large city, that required three days of travel.

After Jonah had traveled for one day, he began to cry out, saying, In but forty days, Nineveh will be destroyed.

¶ Then the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

And when the news came to the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, and laid aside his robe, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

And he caused these words to be proclaimed throughout Nineveh, This is a decree of the king and his nobles, No man or beast, herd or flock, is to taste anything: do not let them eat, or drink water:

But let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God: moreover, let every one turn from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

Who can tell if God will change his mind, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we will not perish?

And God saw what they did, how they turned from their wicked ways; and God relented concerning the harm, that he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it.
