THE BOOK OF JOHN

John Chapter 5

¶ Later on there was a Jewish feast; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is a pool in Jerusalem near the sheep gate, that is called Bethesda in the Hebrew language, and it has five porches.

In those lay a great number of disabled folk, the blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the stirring of the water.

For at a certain time an angel went down into the pool, and disturbed the water: whoever then stepped in first after the troubling of the water was healed of whatever disease he had.

And a certain man was there, who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.

When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been that way for a long time, he said to him, Do you wish to be made well?

The invalid replied, Sir, when the water is troubled, I have no man to help me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steps down before me.

Jesus said to him, Rise, pick up your bed, and walk.

And immediately the man was healed, and picked up his bed, and walked: and the day this took place was the sabbath.

The Jews therefore said to the man who was healed, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.

But He replied, He who made me well, said to me, Pick up your bed, and walk.

So they asked him, Who told you to, Pick up your bed, and walk?

But the man who had been healed did not know who it was: for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd in that place.

Later Jesus found the man in the temple, and said to him, Look, you have been healed: do not sin anymore, or a worse thing may happen to you.

The man then went, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, who had healed him.

Therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he had done those things on the sabbath day, and looked for a way to kill him.

¶ But Jesus said to them, My Father has worked until now, and I work.

Therefore the Jews tried all the harder to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but had also said that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

So Jesus said to them, I assure you, The Son can do nothing by himself, but does what he sees the Father do: because whatever the Father does, the Son also does.

For the Father loves the Son, and shows him everything that he does: and he will show him greater things than these, that you may marvel.

For just as the Father raises the dead, and gives them life; even so the Son gives life to whomever he will.

For the Father does not judge anyone, but has committed all judgment to the Son:

That all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

Truly, truly, I tell you, He who hears my word, and believes on him who sent me, has everlasting life, and will not come into condemnation; but has passed from death to life.

Truly, truly, I tell you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God: and those who hear will live.

For as the Father has life in himself; so he has granted the Son to have life in himself;

And has also given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man.

Do not marvel at this: for the hour is coming, in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice,

And will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of damnation.

I can do nothing of myself: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I do not seek to do my own will, but the will of the Father who has sent me.

¶ If I testify to myself, my testimony is not valid.

There is another who testifies on my behalf; and I know that the testimony that he gives concerning me is valid.

You sent to John, and he bore witness to the truth.

Not that I appeal to the testimony of a man: but I mention it, that you might be saved.

He was a burning and a shining light: and for a time you were willing to rejoice in his light.

But I have a greater witness than that of John: for the works that the Father has given me to carry out, the same works that I do, bear witness on my behalf, that the Father has sent me.

And the Father, who has sent me, has himself borne witness on my behalf. You have never heard his voice at any time, or seen his shape.

And you do not have his word residing in you: for you do not believe the one whom he has sent.

Search the scriptures; for in them you think that you have eternal life: and they are they that testify of me.

But you are not willing to come to me, that you might have life.

I do not desire honor from men.

But I know you, I know that you do not have the love of God in you.

I have come in my Father’s name, but you do not welcome me: if someone else comes in his own name, you will welcome him.

How can you believe, if you receive praise from one another, and do not seek the praise that comes from God alone?

Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father: there is one who accuses you, namely Moses, in whom you trust.

For had you believed Moses, you would have believed me: for he wrote of me.

But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe my words?

[Note: Verse 29 The only people who have not done evil in the sight of God are those whose sins have been washed away by the blood of Christ (Romans 3:10-23, 1John 1:7).]
