THE BOOK OF JOHN

John Chapter 16

¶ I have told you these things, so that you will not be caught unawares.

They will put you out of the synagogues: yes, the time will come, when anyone who kills you will think that he is doing God a service.

And they will do these things to you, because they have not known the Father, or me.

But I have told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you these things at the beginning, because I was with you.

But now I am going to him who sent me; and none of you asks me, Where are you going?

But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.

¶ Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is to your advantage for me to go away: for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send him to you.

And when he has come, he will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment:

Of sin, because they do not believe in me;

Of righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you will not see me anymore;

Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

However when, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth: for he will not speak on his own; but whatever he hears, he will speak: and he will show you things to come.

He will glorify me: for he will take what is mine, and reveal it to you.

Everything the Father has is mine: that is why I said, that he will take what is mine, and reveal it to you.

¶ In a little while, you will no longer see me: and again, in a little while, you will see me, because I go to the Father.

Then some of his disciples said among themselves, What does he mean when he says, In a little while, you will no longer see me: and again, in a little while, you will see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

So they kept asking, What does he mean, In a little while? we do not understand what he means.

Now Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, and said to them, Are you trying to find out from one another what I meant when I said, In a little while, you will no longer see me: and again, in a little while, you will see me?

Truly, truly, I tell you, You will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice: and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

When a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her time has come: but as soon as she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the pain, because of the joy that a child has been brought into the world.

You too are sad now: but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

¶ On that day you will not ask me any questions. Truly, truly, I tell you, Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give to you.

Up to now you have not asked anything in my name: ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

I have told you these things in vague language: but the time is coming, when I will no longer speak vaguely, but will plainly tell you of the Father.

In that day you will ask in my name: and I am not saying that, I will pray to the Father for you:

For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came from the Father.

¶ I left the Father, and came into the world: and now, I am leaving the world, and going to the Father.

Then his disciples said, Now you are speaking plainly, and not in vague language.

Now we are sure that you know all things, and do not need to wait for anyone to ask you: that is why we believe that you came from God.

Jesus answered, Do you finally believe?

Behold, the hour is coming, yea, has now arrived, when you will be scattered, every man for himself, and will leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

I have told you these things, so that you will have peace in me. In the world you will have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
