THE BOOK OF JOHN

John Chapter 11

¶ Now a man, named Lazarus, who was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha, was sick.

(It was Mary who anointed the Lord with scented liquid, and wiped his feet with her hair, and her brother Lazarus was sick.)

Therefore his sisters sent to Jesus, saying, Lord, one whom you love is sick.

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

Yet when he heard that he was sick, he remained where he was for two more days.

Then he said to his disciples, Let us go to Judea again.

But master, his disciples replied, the Jews have recently sought to stone you; and you are going there again?

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees this world’s light.

But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because he has no light.

After he said these things, he added, Our friend Lazarus sleeps; but I am going there, to wake him up.

Then his disciples said, Lord, if he sleeps, he should be alright.

However Jesus spoke of his death: but they thought that he was speaking about taking rest in sleep.

Then Jesus plainly said, Lazarus is dead.

And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; nevertheless let us go to him.

Then Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to the rest of the disciples, Let us go also, that we may die with him.

¶ So when Jesus got there, he found that Lazarus had already been in the grave for four days.

Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles off:

And many Jews had come to comfort Mary and Martha, concerning their brother.

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him: but Mary remained in the house.

Lord, Martha said to Jesus, If you had been here, my brother would not have died.

But I know, that even now, whatever you ask of God, God will give to you.

Jesus replied, Your brother will rise again.

Martha responded, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he who believes in me will yet live, even though is dead:

And whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?

She said to him, Yes, Lord: I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.

And after she said that, she went back, and called her sister Mary aside, saying, The Master has arrived, and is asking for you.

As soon as Mary heard that, she arose quickly, and went to him.

Now Jesus had not yet entered the town, but was at the place where Martha met him.

When the Jews who were in the house with Mary, comforting her, saw her get up quickly and go out, they followed her, assuming that she was going to the grave to weep there.

Then when Mary reached the place where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

¶ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews that had come with her also weeping, he groaned in his spirit, and was troubled,

And asked, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see.

Jesus wept.

And the Jews said, See how much he loved him!

And some of them asked, Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have kept Lazarus from dying?

Sighing to himself again, Jesus went to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying over it.

Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to him, Lord, by this time he will stink: for he has been dead four days.

Jesus replied, Did I not tell you, that, if you would believe, you would see the glory of God?

Then they removed the stone from the place where the body was. And Jesus looked up, and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

I know that you always hear me: but I said it because of the people standing here, that they may believe that you have sent me.

And when he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out.

And he who had been dead came out, wrapped hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face had a cloth wrapped around it. Jesus then said to them, Loose him, and let him go.

¶ Then many of the Jews who had come with Mary, and seen what Jesus had done, believed on him.

But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus had done.

Then the chief priests and Pharisees held a council, and said, What shall we do? for this man does many miracles.

If we let him alone, everyone will believe in him: and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.

And one of them, named Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, declared, You know nothing at all,

Nor do you take into account the fact that it is better for us, that one man should die for the people, so that the entire nation does not die.

Now he did not say this on his own: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation;

And not only for that nation, but that Jesus would also bring together and unite the children of God who were scattered abroad.

So from that day forward they took counsel together to put him to death.

Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews; but went from there to a region near the desert, into a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

When it was almost time for the Jewish passover: and many from the country were going up to Jerusalem, to purify themselves, before the passover began.

They kept looking for Jesus, and asked each other as they stood in the temple, What do you think, will he come to the festival or not?

Now the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders, that, if anyone knew where Jesus was, he should report it, so they might arrest him.
