THE BOOK OF JEREMIAH

Jeremiah Chapter 7

¶ The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

Stand in the gate of the LORD’S house, and there proclaim this word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all you of Judah, who enter through these gates to worship the LORD.

The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel says, Correct your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to remain in this place.

Do not trust in lying words, that say, This is the LORD’S temple, The LORD’S temple, The LORD’S temple.

For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if you thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbor;

If you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your hurt:

Then will I cause you to remain in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.

Look, you trust in lies, that cannot help you.

Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and run after other gods whom you do not know;

And then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are safe, only to continue doing these wicked things?

Do you regard this house, which is called by my name, as a den of thieves? Yes, I have also seen it, says the LORD.

But now go to my place at Shiloh, where I first made a home for my name, and see what I did to it because my people Israel were so wicked.

And now, because you have done all these things, says the LORD, although I rose up early and warned you, but you did not listen; and called to you, but you did not respond;

Therefore, what I have done to Shiloh, I will do to this house, in which you trust, which is called by my name, and which I gave to you and to your fathers.

And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, including all of Ephraim’s descendants.

¶ Therefore do not pray for these people, or raise a cry or appeal for them, and do not plead with me: for I will not hear you.

Do you not see what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle a fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and pour out drink offerings to other gods, so that they may provoke me to anger.

Are they really provoking me? asks the LORD: are they not provoking themselves to their own shame?

Therefore the Lord GOD says this; Realize, that my anger and my fury will be poured out on this place, on man, on beast, on the trees of the field, and on the fruit of the ground; and it will burn, and will not be put out.

¶ The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel says this; Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat meat.

For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers, or command them, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

But this is what I commanded them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you will be my people: and walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.

But they did not listen, or pay attention, but followed their own plans and the stubborn impulses of their own evil heart, and went backward, rather than forward.

From the day that your fathers left the land of Egypt to this day I have faithfully sent my servants the prophets to you, daily rising up early and sending them:

However they would not listen to me, or pay attention, but hardened their neck: and behaved worse than their fathers.

Therefore you will tell them all these things; but they will not listen to you: you will also preach to them; but they will not respond.

Still you will say to them, This is a nation that refuses to listen to the voice of the LORD their God, or receive instruction: truth has died, and has disappeared from their mouths.

¶ Cut off your hair, O Jerusalem, and throw it away, and raise the voice of mourning on the hills; for the LORD has rejected and abandoned the generation under his wrath.

For the LORD says, The children of Judah have done evil in my sight: they have set up their abominations in the house which is called by my name, and defiled it.

And they have built the high place of Tophet, which is in the valley of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; I did not command them to do this, nor did I want it.

Therefore, realize that the days are coming, says the LORD, when it will no longer be called Tophet, or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of death: because they will bury people in Tophet, until there is no room left.

And the dead bodies of the people will be food for the birds of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and no one will scare them away.

Then I will cause the sound of laughter, and happiness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the bride to no longer be heard in the cities of Judah, and the streets of Jerusalem,: for the land will be desolate.
