IDOLATRY IN AMERICA
A STUDY BY
GARY RAY BRANSCOME
"The things which the Gentiles
sacrifice,
they sacrifice to devils and not to God; and I would not that ye should
have fellowship with devils. ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord
and the cup of devils; ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table and
of
the table of devils." (1 Corinthians 10:20-21)
The words
just quoted make it perfectly clear that all religions do not worship
the same God, that religious belief has no common denominator, and that
there is no common ground between Christianity and false religion.
Before the day of Pentecost Satan held almost the entire world under
his spell, and it would be foolish to ignore the danger of false
religion in our world today. The devils who deceived the world in ages
past have not gone away, but are more active today than ever before.
While many non-Christian religions now disguise their beliefs in order
to make them more attractive to Christians, they still worship devils,
and the people that have been deceived by those religions still need to
be saved.
SPIRITUAL WARFARE
Although a few cults openly advocate Satanism, they are only a
diversion that Satan uses to draw attention away from the main thrust
of his multifaceted attack on Christianity. That attack is using
liberalism to divide and neutralize the testimony of God’s church,
using cults to snare those who have confused by the controversy, and
using the schools and universities to spread secular religion,
marginalize Christianity, undermine its credibility, capture control of
the entertainment industry, and advance political ideologies that work
to divorce Christian influence from government and the public sector.
Furthermore, as Satan works to ensnare believers in his web of
deceit you can expect most of his agents to pass themselves off as
Christians rather than Satanists (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). However, in
spite of the masquerade it is often possible to uncover similarities
between the false religions that he is now promoting and the pagan
system that he promoted in ancient times.
ARABIAN IDOLATRY
At the time of Christ, the Greeks, Romans, and Arabians all
worshiped a pantheon of male and female deities, one being chief over
the others. While the Greeks called the chief god of their
pantheon Zeus, the Romans called him Jupiter, and the Arabians called
him Allah. In fact, the symbol of the crescent moon is associated with
the Moslem religion to this very day, because in Arabian mythology
Allah was known as the moon god. Furthermore, Arabians still worship
that same god! Mohamed did not replace the worship of Allah with
worship of the true God, Satan simply used him to streamline the
Arabian version of the existing pagan religious system in order to make
it more competitive with Christianity.
If you think that every Moslem would disagree with what I just said,
think again. For I once pointed that very fact out to a Moslem only to
have him say, “that one idol just happened to be the true God.” I think
it is significant that he did not deny what I said, or even disagree
with me. He simply claimed that his idol was the true god. However, his
claim contradicts Scripture, for the Bible tells us that all who
worship idols, Allah included, are worshipping devils (1 Corinthians
10:20-21). Therefore, while Mohammed reduced the number of gods
worshipped by the Arabian people from 300 to one, and got rid of the
statues, the satanic nature of the religion is still the same. In fact,
the Koran even speaks of Allah’s three daughters, if only to say that
they should no longer be worshipped (Sura 53:19-20).
MASONIC IDOLATRY
Although the Masonic religion has been able to successfully
infiltrate most Christian denominations, it denies the very foundation
of our faith by denying that salvation is through Christ alone and by
eliminating prayer in the name of Jesus. Satan simply uses that
organization to lead those that join it gradually, and by degrees, into
idolatry. If you have any doubts, by all means get a copy of the book
“Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite” by Albert
Pike. The author of that book was a high-ranking Mason, and Masons
regard it as one of the most authoritative books on Masonry. Yet, on
page 422 we read, “Zeus is the primitive Source of all things; there is
one God; one power, and one rule over all.” That book goes on to
speak well of all pagan deities while criticizing only of the Christian
religion. Therefore, it should not surprise you to learn that Masons
claim to worship the same god as the Mohammedans, and wear the crescent
moon symbol of Allah.
[Pastors who remain silent while allowing those under their charge
to join, or continue in, Masonic idolatry will answer to God (Ezekiel
33:6).
MORMON IDOLATRY
While Mormons try to pass themselves off as Christians, and claim to
worship the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost what they are not likely to
tell you is that they reject the doctrine of the Trinity, believe that
millions of gods (and goddesses) exist, and claim that the Father, Son
and Holy Ghost are only three of those gods. One of their own
“Apostles” put it this way, “God has a father, grandfather, great
grandfather, great great grandfather, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles,
cousins, children, grandchildren, wives, etc., etc.” (Apostle Orson
Pratt – The Seer, p. 132 and other references). Therefore, like the
ancient pagans Mormons are clearly polytheistic. Furthermore, like the
pagans, Mormons believe that the gods they worship have physical bodies
[except for the “Holy Ghost” who they regard as a phantom] and sexual
natures. However, the Bible clearly exposes those who attribute such
characteristics to deity as idolaters (Romans 1:23).
Now because Mormons try to gain members by tricking people into
believing that they are just another Christian denomination, some
Mormons are not fully aware of what their religion teaches. In fact,
one woman told me that she was a member of the Mormon Church for four
years before she started to hear some of their weird doctrines.
However, most Mormons know that they do not worship the omnipresent
creator of the universe. For according to their mythology god was once
a man, grew up on another planet (by a star called Kolab), has a
physical body, has goddess wives, and earned the right to be a god by
his works. While that is clearly not the God of the Bible, it is not
significantly different from the ancient pagan concept of god. Like the
Mormon god, the Roman god Jupiter (who was called the father of the
gods) had a physical body, goddess wives, a father (Saturn), and a
grandfather (Uranus). For that reason, I see the Mormon religion
as nothing more than warmed over paganism.
WATCHTOWER IDOLATRY
While followers of the Watchtower will insist that they worship
Jehovah, their “Jehovah” is not the Jehovah “that was made flesh and
dwelt among us” in the person of Christ Jesus (John 1:1-14). For the
Jehovah of the Bible is not only our Father, but also our savior and
redeemer (Isaiah 43:3,10,10,11, Isaiah 54:5). Therefore, when the Bible
identifies Jesus as the “Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6), the Watchtower
simply explains away what the Bible says. In fact, they would rather
claim that there are many “Mighty God’s” (Just like the pagans) than
accept the words of scripture. And the Bible makes it clear that all
who refuse to accept the word of the Apostles and prophets have a
spirit of error (1 John 4:6).
Just as the Jehovah of the Watchtower is not the Jehovah of the
Bible, the Christ of the Watchtower is not the Christ of the Bible. And
because the Holy Spirit will never give the gift of faith to those who
worship a false Christ, the children of the Watchtower can quote what
the Bible says about faith in Christ without ever really believing it.
DARWINIAN IDOLATRY
The god who supposedly “used evolution to create
man,” is not the God of the Bible. Moreover, the fact that the god of
evolution is the origin and cause of pain, suffering and death, not
only slanders the God of the Bible, but honors Satan (who is actually
the source of pain, suffering, and death) by equating him with God
(John 8:44, Romans 5:12). For that reason, I not only see
theistic-evolution as a form of idolatry, but believe that the growing
acceptance of homosexuality in many churches stems directly from their
rejection of the true God in favor of the god of theistic-evolution
(Romans 1:24-32).
CONCLUSION
God has given us His Word so that we will
not be deceived and led astray by false prophets. For that reason,
Satan efforts will be directed at leading you away from what is
actually written, by moving you to read unscriptural ideas into the
text and to explain away any statements that do not seem to agree with
your own ideas. Therefore, as it is written, “Be sober, be vigilant,
because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about
seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8, Ezekiel 22:25).
