THE BOOK OF HOSEA

Hosea Chapter 8

¶ Put the trumpet to your mouth. The enemy comes like an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and rebelled against my law.

Israel will cry to me, My God, we know you.

But Israel has spurned what is good: the enemy will pursue him.

They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, but I did not recognize them: they have made idols out of their silver and their gold, to their own destruction.

Your calf-god, O Samaria, is loathsome; my anger is kindled against them: how long can they go unpunished?

For it was made in Israel: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria will be broken in pieces.

For they have sown the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind: there is no standing grain: the buds will not produce any meal: if they did, foreigners would devour it.

¶ Israel will be swallowed up: already they are among the Gentiles like discarded pottery.

For they have gone up to Assyria, like a wild donkey wandering off on his own: Ephraim has hired lovers.

Yes, though they have hired allies among the nations, I will now gather them up, and they will suffer for a while under the burden of the king of princes.

Although Ephraim has made many altars for sin offerings, they became the altars on which he sins.

I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were regarded as something strange.

They sacrifice flesh to me, so they can eat it; but the LORD does not accept them; now he will remember their sin, and punish their wrongdoing: they will go back to Egypt.

For Israel has forgotten his Maker, and builds temples; and Judah has built many fortified cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it will devour his palaces.
