THE BOOK OF EZRA

Ezra Chapter 1

¶ Now during the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD put it into the mind of king Cyrus to make a proclamation throughout his entire kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,

Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he has charged me to build a house for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

Whoever is among you of all his people? may his God be with him, and may he go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and rebuild the temple of the LORD God of Israel. He is the God who is in Jerusalem.

Let whoever remains, wherever he lives, be assisted by the men of that area with silver, gold, goods, and livestock, along with a freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.

¶ Then the leaders of the clans of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all those whose spirit God had stirred up, got ready to go up to rebuild the house of the LORD that is in Jerusalem.

And all those who were around them assisted them with vessels of silver and gold, along with goods, and livestock, and precious things, besides all that was willingly offered.

Cyrus the king also brought out the vessels of the LORD’s temple, that Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem, and put in the temple of his gods;

Cyrus the king of Persia put Mithredath the treasurer in charge of bringing these out, and he made a list of them for Sheshbazzar, heir to the throne of Judah.

And this is the number of them: thirty bowls of gold, a thousand bowls of silver, twenty-nine knives,

Thirty basins of gold, four hundred and ten silver basins of another kind, and one thousand other articles.

All the articles of gold and of silver totaled five thousand four hundred. Sheshbazzar took all these along when the exiles went from Babylon to Jerusalem.
