THE BOOK OF EXODUS

Exodus Chapter 2

¶ Now Amram a man of the house of Levi, took as his wife a daughter of Levi.

And the woman conceived, and bore a son: and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months.

And when she could no longer hide him, she got a basket made of bulrushes for him, and daubed it with asphalt and pitch, and put the child in it; and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.

And his sister stood at a distance, to see what would happen to him.

¶ Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the river; and her maidens walked along the river bank; and when she saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it.

And when she opened it, she saw the child: and he was crying. And she felt sorry for him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children.

Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?

And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother.

And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will pay you. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.

And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she named him Moses: saying, It is because I drew him out of the water.

¶ Years later, when Moses was grown, he went out to his own people, and saw their hardships: and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren.

And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw no one, he killed the Egyptian, and buried him in the sand.

And when he went out the next day, he saw two Hebrews fighting: and he asked the one who was doing wrong, Why are you attacking your neighbor?

And he replied, Who made you a prince and a judge over us? do you intend to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian? Then Moses was afraid, and thought, Surely this thing is known.

Now when Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh, and took refuge in the land of Midian: where he sat down by a well.

¶ Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

But shepherds came and drove them away: then Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

And when they returned to their father Reuel, he asked, How is it that you are back so early today?

And they said, An Egyptian defended us from the shepherds, and also drew water for us, and watered the flock.

And he said to his daughters, Where is he? why have you left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.

And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.

And she bore him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.

¶ After a long time, the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel groaned because of their bondage, and they cried out, and their cries for help in their bondage came up to God.

And God heard their groaning, and remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

And God saw the children of Israel, and He cared.
