THE BOOK OF ESTHER

Esther Chapter 6

¶ During that night the king could not sleep, so he ordered the book of historical records brought; and they were read before the king.

And it was found written, that Mordecai had reported Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s chamberlains, who guarded the door, who had plotted to lay hands on king Ahasuerus.

And the king asked, What honor or distinction has been given to Mordecai for this? Then the king’s servants who attended him said, Nothing has been done for him.

¶ Then the king asked, Who is in the court? Now Haman had come into the outer court of the king’s palace, to ask the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.

And the king’s servants said to him, Behold, Haman is standing in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.

So Haman came in. And the king said to him, What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor? Now Haman thought in his heart, Who would the king delight to honor more than to myself?

So Haman said to the king, For the man whom the king delights to honor,

Let a royal robe be brought that the king has worn, and a horse that the king has ridden, and a royal crown be placed on his head:

And let this robe and horse be given to one of the king’s most noble officers, who should put the robe on the man whom the king delights to honor, and conduct him on horseback through the city square, proclaiming before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.

Then the king said to Haman, Hurry, and take the robe and the horse, as you have said, and do that for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate: do not leave out anything that you have said.

Then Haman took the robe and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and conducted him on horseback through the city square, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.

¶ Then Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman hurried to his house grieving, and with his head covered.

And Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends every thing that had happened to him. Then his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of the Jewish people, you will not prevail against him, but will surely fall before him.

And while they were yet talking with him, the king’s chamberlains arrived, and quickly took Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
