Lesson 29

Jesus Christ Is Coming Again

"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ." - Titus 2, 13.

1. How do we know that Christ is coming again?

"Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat." - 2 Saint Peter 3, 12.

The Bible teaches very definitely that Jesus Christ, the God-man, will come again to judge both the living and the dead.

2. How do we know that Christ is coming soon?

"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce-breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof; from such turn away.  For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." - 2 Timothy 3, 1-7.

The predicted second advent of Christ may be expected at any time, since all the signs which are to remind us of His coming have been fulfilled or are in the process of fulfillment.

3. When will Jesus Christ come again?

"The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." - Saint Mark 13, 32.

He will come on the last day, which is appointed by God, but unknown to man.

4. How will Christ return?

"This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven." - Acts 1, 11.

"Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him." - Revelation 1, 7.

"When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory." - Saint Matthew 25, 31.

Christ will return visibly and in glory, surrounded by His holy angels.

5. For what purpose is Christ coming again?

 a. "The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first." - 1 Thessalonians 4, 16.

First, for the resurrection of the dead.

 b. "We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." - 2 Corinthians 5, 10.

The second purpose is the final judgment of all men.

 c. "The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." - 2 Saint Peter 3, 10.

"Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat." - 2 Saint Peter 3, 12.

The third purpose is to herald the last day, the end of the world, when earth and heaven shall come to ruin and pass away, consumed in fire.

6. Is it true that Christ will reign visibly on earth for a thousand years?

Holy Scripture does not teach a millennium of this kind.  The passages usually quoted in its favor simply describe the spiritual glory of the Church of the New Testament.

The teaching of the millennium expressly contradicts Holy Scripture which plainly teaches:

 a. That the time of the New Testament and especially the days before Christ's coming, shall be a period of great suffering for all who love the Lord Jesus Christ.

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace.  In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." - Saint John 16, 33.

"Ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.  And ye shall be hated of all men for My name's sake." - Saint Luke 21, 16-17.

 b. That Christ's kingdom is not earthly and external, but spiritual and internal.

"The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for behold, the kingdom of God is within you." - Saint Luke 17, 20-21.

"The kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost." - Romans 14, 17.
