Lesson 26

Will The Dead Rise Again?

"The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." - 1 Corinthians 15, 52.

1. How do we know that our dead bodies shall rise again?

"It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.  There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body." - 1 Corinthians 15, 44.

"For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality." - 1 Corinthians 15, 53.

"And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." - Saint John 5, 29.

The Bible clearly teaches that the first act of Christ at His second coming on the last day will be to raise and quicken the dead.

2. Does the Old Testament also teach the resurrection from the dead?

"I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God." - Job 19, 25- 26.

"Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise.  Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead." - Isaiah 26, 19.

"Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt." - Daniel 12, 2.

The doctrine of the resurrection is clearly taught in the Old Testament.  This glorious Bible truth is as old as Gospel preaching.

3. Wherein does the resurrection of the dead consist?

First, in the restoration of our body which has perished by death from the same atomic particles which have been scattered over the earth, and, second in the reunion of the body with the soul.

"God . . . quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were." - Romans 4, 17.

The resurrection is as great a miracle of God's power as is creation, and this is beyond the comprehension of man.

4. Who will be raised from the dead?

"The hour is comin, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice." - Saint John 5, 28.

Scripture answers that all men will rise again, both the believers and unbelievers.

5. What difference will there be in the resurrection from the dead?

"He shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself." - Philippians 3, 21.

"Behold I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." - 1 Corinthians 15, 51-52.

 a. The believers will rise with glorified bodies to everlasting life in heaven.

"In hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.  And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame." - Saint Luke 16, 23-24.

 b. The unbelievers will rise to eternal death, that is, to everlasting shame and suffering in hell.

6. What portion of our bodies will rise from the dead?

"He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you." - Romans 8, 11.

"Though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God." - Job 19, 26.

"He shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body." - Philippians 3, 21.

Our same body which previously died, the same in number and essence which was born in this life and which perished through death, will be raised by God's almighty power.  It will, of course, be united with the soul.  As death is the separation of the body and the soul, so resurrection is the reunion of the body with the soul.  However, while the same body will rise from the grave, it will have new qualities.

"The dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." - 1 Corinthians 15, 52.

The resurrection of the believers will be spiritual, that is, suited to the spiritual life with God in glory.

"Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection." - Saint Luke 20, 36.

"He shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself." - Philippians 3, 21.

What unspeakable glory, to resemble the holy angels and even our God himself!  All physical defects, all traces of age and suffering (the consequences of sin) will be gone.  Our bodies will shine with heavenly light and glory.
