Lesson 6

Mankind Before The Fall

1. Was man, as created, the same as he is today?

"God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them." - Genesis 1, 26- 27.

In his original state, man resembled God, because God was the pattern according to which man was made.

2. What is "the image of God?"

"Put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." - Ephesians 4, 24.

The divine image consisted not simply in Man's intelligence and will, but in "righteousness and true holiness." Man before the Fall was entirely upright and uncorrupt.

3. What was the relation of God's image to the nature of man?

Man's original wisdom, righteousness and holiness were received at the very moment of creation.  Accordingly, man's nature after the Fall is no longer uncorrupt, but in a state of corruption.  The seat of the divine image was not the body, but the soul of man, for such qualities as the knowledge of God, holiness and righteousness are properly attributed to the soul.  However, the body shared in the divine image, and an immediate result was bodily immortality.  Death entered into the world through the Fall.

"So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.: - Genesis 1, 27- 28.

"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife; and they shall be one flesh." - Genesis 2, 24.

The two persons whom God made in the beginning were joined in wedlock by the Creator, to preserve and propagate the human race, in the likeness of their parents.

4. What were the two results of the divine image?

"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned." - Romans 5, 12.

God blessed them, and God said unto them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." - Genesis 1, 28.

The immediate results of the divine image in man were:
 a. immortality and b. dominion over the earth.

5. Did Eve also possess this likeness to God?

"So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them." - Genesis 1, 27.

Not only Adam but also Eve possessed the divine image.

6. Does not the doctrine of the divine image definitely contradict the theory of evolution?

"The Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." - Genesis 2, 16-17.

It assuredly does.  The evolutionistic view, according to which man was originally a brute creature, without the power of speech and without moral endowments, is anti-Scriptural.  According to Scripture man was created as lord of all the other creatures of God, possessing moral endowments, intellectual attainments, and an undimmed, blissful knowledge of God.

7. For what purpose did God create man in His own image?

"O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good; for His mercy endureth forever.  O give thanks unto the God of gods; for His mercy endureth forever.  O give thanks to the Lord of lords; for His mercy endureth forever.  To Him who alone doeth great wonders; for His mercy endureth forever.  To Him that by wisdom made the heavens; for His mercy endureth forever.  To Him that stretched out the earth above the water; for His mercy endureth forever.  To Him that made great lights; for His mercy endureth forever.  The sun to fule by day; for His mercy endureth forever.  The moon and stars to rule by night; for His mercy endureth forever." - Psalm 136, 1-9.

In His infinite grace God bestowed His divine image upon man in order (a) That he might know and serve Him and experience perfect enjoyment in communion with Him and (b) The creation of man in God's image flowed from His love.
