Acts Chapter 16

¶ Paul then came to Derbe and Lystra: and a certain disciple, named Timothy, was there, the son of a Jewish woman, who was a believer; but his father was a Greek:

He had a good reputation among the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium.

Paul wanted Timothy to go with him; and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that area: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Now as they went from city to city, they delivered the decisions, reached by the apostles and elders who were at Jerusalem for them to observe.

And so the churches were strengthened in the faith, and grew daily in numbers.

¶ Now they went through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, because the Holy Spirit kept them from preaching the word in the province of Asia,

After they came as far as Mysia, they wanted to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit of Jesus did not let them.

So they passed through Mysia and went down to Troas.

And Paul had a vision during the night; A man of Macedonia stood, and pleaded with him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

And after Paul had seen the vision, we immediately sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Therefore setting sail from Troas, we followed a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;

And from there we traveled to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a Roman colony: and we stayed in that city a number of days.

And on the sabbath we went outside the city gate beside a river, where we expected to find a place of prayer; and we sat down, and spoke to the women who gathered there.

And one of those who listened to us, was a woman named Lydia, who was a worshipper of God, and a seller of purple cloth, imported from the city of Thyatira: whose heart the Lord opened in response to what was said by Paul.

And after she was baptized, along with her household, she urged us, saying, If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house, and stay there. And she persuaded us.

¶ And it so happened, that as we were going to the place of prayer, a certain girl who had a spirit of divination, who brought her masters much gain by fortune-telling, met us:

This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, These men are the servants of the most high God, who show us the way of salvation.

And she kept this up for many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And at that moment the spirit left her.

And when her masters saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace to the rulers,

And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, are stirring up trouble in our city,

And teaching customs, which it is not lawful for us to accept, or to observe, being Romans.

And the crowd rose up together against them: and the magistrates tore off their clothes, and gave orders to beat them.

And when they had beaten them with many blows, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safe:

Who, upon receiving such orders, thrust them into the inner prison, and fastened their feet in the stocks.

¶ And about midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises to God: and the prisoners heard them.

And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors flew open, and every one’s chains came loose.

But the keeper of the prison awaking from sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, assuming that the prisoners had escaped.

But Paul shouted with a loud voice, saying, Do not harm yourself: for we are all here.

Then he called for a light, and rushed in, and trembling, fell down before Paul and Silas,

And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.

And they spoke the word of the Lord to him, and to all who were in his house.

And he took them at that hour of the night, and washed their wounds; and he and all his house were baptized right away.

And when he had taken them into his house, he set food before them, and rejoiced along with his whole house, believing in God.

¶ And when it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the prison, saying, Let those men go.

And the jailer relayed the message to Paul, saying, The magistrates sent word to let you go: therefore come out now, and go in peace.

But Paul said to the officers, They have beaten us publicly without a trial, although we are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and now they would release us privately? no indeed; let them come themselves and escort us out.

And the officers reported these words to the magistrates: and they were afraid, when they heard that they were Romans.

So they came and apologized to them, and escorted them out, and asked them to leave the city.

And they left the prison, and went to Lydia’s house: and after they had seen the brethren, and encouraged them, they departed.
