FIRST SAMUEL

Samuel Chapter 3

¶ Now the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; and a vision was infrequent.

And one day when Eli, whose eyesight had dimmed, so that he could not see, was lying down in his own room;

And before the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, Samuel was lying down to sleep;

Then the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.

And he ran to Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. And he said, I did not call; lie back down. And he went back and lay down.

And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. And he answered, I did not call, my son; lie down again.

Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, nor was the word of the LORD yet revealed to him.

And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. And Eli realized that the LORD had called the child.

Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down: and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, LORD; for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for your servant is listening.

¶ And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do something in Israel, at which the ears of every one who hears it will tingle.

On that day I will perform against Eli everything that I have said concerning his house: when I begin, I will also finish it.

For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever because of the iniquity which he knows of; because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.

Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house will not be purged with sacrifice or offering forever.

And Samuel lay until the morning, and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli.

Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.

And he said, What is the thing that the LORD has said to you? I pray you do not hide it from me: God do so to you, and more also, if you hide any thing from me of all that he said to you.

And Samuel told him everything, and hid nothing from him. And Eli said, It is the LORD: let him do what seems good to him.

¶ And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did not let any of his words fall to the ground.

And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

And the LORD continued to appear in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
